In areas where the telecom towers are connected to the stable grid, Illumina Africa can offer both a hybrid as well as a grid tied option (just solar). You benefit from producing electricity at 30 – 50% of the utility cost.
Power Mini grids with Illumina Africa
Solar mini- grid systems offer a more sustainable and affordable AC power solution when compared to power supplied only from a diesel generator. Illumina Africa’s advanced hybrid mini- grid designs (can be combined with diesel generators into a hybrid off-grid system) increases the flexibility and reliability of the entire system while still reducing dependence on the ever increasing cost of diesel fuel. Storage, along with AC and DC coupled solar PV can be added as needed to support the required autonomy.
Storage is the most critical component of a mini-grid, since it comprises of the largest proportion of total cost of the mini-grid lifetime. Since current state technology is usually replaced 4-6 times over the life of the Mini-Grid, there is some serious room for improvement. Illumina is working to lower the replacement frequency of batteries in Mini-Grid applications by utilizing better technology such as Lithium ion.
